Monday, January 19

Special: Global Village celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with songs dedicated to him, inspired by the Civil Rights Movement he lead, and that reflect human rights themes performed by artists from around the globe.

Tuesday, January 20

Global Village celebrates the birthday of Mexican ‘space age’ composer Esquivel, and highlights more of the Best of 2014 including selections from show favorites, the Cumbia All Stars and Mike Marshall with Choro Famoso, and World Music Grammy nominees – Sergio Mendes, and Wu Man with Luis Conte and Daniel Ho. Plus new music from Kansas City’s Ensemble Iberica and guitarists Strunz & Farah.

Wednesday, January 21

Global Village marks the birthdays of Richie Havens and Crescent City guitarist Snooks Eaglin; highlights more of the Best of 2014 – including award winning fado singer Mariza, and show favorites – Spain’s Korrontzi and the Cocek! Brass Band ; and features new music from the William Onyeabor box set and Barcelona’s Alma Afrobeat Ensemble.

Thursday, January 22

Global Village pays a visit to Colombia for a wide array of styles and artists – including the popular contemporary rock group Aterciopelados, Carlos Vives (from his 2014 album that took home two Latin Grammys), the recent Afrosound of Colombia Vol. 2 compilation, a new contemporary classical album, Guitar Music of Colombia, and more. Plus more show favorites of 2014 – this time from Afrobeat legend Tony Allen and the number one pick for the year from Grand Fatilla.

 Friday, January 23

Global Village celebrates the birthday of Django Reinhardt with music from the legendary gypsy jazz guitarist and from a variety of groups inspired by his playing and style. Plus more of the Best of 2014 – including music from Grammy-nominated albums from Mike Marshall & Turtle Island Quartet, and from Jesse Winchester, plus show favorites – the Arun Ramamuthry Trio, and Adrian Raso with Fanfare Ciocarlia.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
