Officials today unveiled a new plaque on the Statehouse grounds commemorating President Dwight Eisenhower.

Tim Rives, with the Eisenhower Presidential Library in Abilene, noted a series of the president’s accomplishments, ranging from leading the war effort in Europe to managing the integration of public schools in Little Rock, Arkansas.

“Eisenhower always said ‘the proudest thing I can claim is that I am from Abilene.’ This new plaque on the Kansas Walk of Honor returns that compliment to President Eisenhower and Mr. President, Abilene and Kansas are proud of you, too,” Rives says.

The Kansas Walk of Honor is a series of markers around the Statehouse grounds remembering important Kansans.

During the event, Governor Brownback also called for putting a statue of Eisenhower outside the Statehouse. He says his administration has worked sporadically on it, but isn’t unveiling a formal plan.
