The Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport reports that this past July saw a record number of passengers.

Last month, there were more than 158,000 passengers who flew either in or out of the Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport. That surpasses the previous record set in July 2007 by nearly 2,000 people. It’s also about 9 percent higher than July of last year.

The numbers also indicate that the airport has fewer flights and airlines than in 2007. Spokesperson Valerie Wise says that’s due to airline mergers and the fact that airplanes are now more full. She fares have remained low.

“Fares have not increased substantially," Wise says. "Actually, our fares are still 30 percent less than in 2000.”

Wise says that to give a particular reason for the record month would be speculation, but she does say that travel demand is often tied to how well the economy is doing, and that July is big for vacations.
