Electric Jazz Guitar, Bastille Day, Soul Jazz & Birthdays Of Paul Gonsalves, Leroy Vinnegar And More

Monday 7.11.16

Tonight’s Night Train focuses on soul jazz – the lively and soulful style that most often brought together electric guitar (which we are featuring throughout July on the Night Train), with organ and saxophone. Among the highlights:  veteran soul jazz guitarist Jimmy Ponder, guitarist George Benson with both Jack McDuff, and the duo of Hank Crawford and Jimmy McGriff,  drummer Steve Johns with guitarist Dave Stryker, Styker’s album in tribute to soul jazz great Stanley Turrentine,  and Stanley Turrentine himself with his classic version of Marvin Gaye’s “Don’t Mess with Mr. T.”

Tuesday 7.12.16

Night Train continues the July feature celebrating the electric guitar in jazz (for Charlie Christian’s centennial birthday) with music from Ed Cherry, Kenny Burrell, and also from Chuck Loeb, who was born on this date. Birthday salutes as well for Ellington tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves and Hammond B3 organist Big John Patton – and new music from drummer Peter Erskine, trumpeter Jim Rotondi, and pianists Luis Perdomo and Dan Cray.

Wednesday 7.13.16

Night Train marks the birthday of one of the greats of the walking bass, Leroy Vinnegar, with music he did as a leader and guesting with Gerry Mulligan, Barney Kessel, Benny Carter, and Teddy Edwards. Plus more electric jazz guitar for the July feature – including Charlie Christian (with the Benny Goodman Sextet), Herb Ellis, Joe Pass, John Scofield, and Corey Christiansen. And there’s new music from Allen Toussaint’s last album, Roberta Piket’s tribute to Marian McPartland, the Bill Charlap Trio, and saxophonists Benny Golson and Kenny Garrett.

Thursday 7.14.16

Night Train celebrates Bastille Day with music from French jazz artists Michel Petrucciani, Eddy Louiss, Jean-Luc Ponty, Trio Sud, Jacky Terrason, the recent release for the first time of music Larry Young recorded for French radio, and in hour two of the show, a special about the Hot Club of France with DjangoReinhardt and StephaneGrappelli. Plus birthday salutes to jazz cellist Akua Dixon and Latin jazz percussionist Sabu Martinez, and new music from New Zealand organist Adrienne Fenemore.
