Electric Jazz Guitar Month Begins, Soul Jazz Night, & Paquito D’Rivera’s Birthday

Monday 6.1.15

Night Train kicks off the June Electric Jazz Guitar feature (celebrating the 100th birthday of solid body electric pioneer Les Paul) with music from Les Paul, jazz guitar ‘power trio’ pioneer Kenny Burrell, and two exciting contemporary jazz guitarists – Nels Cline and Julian Lage.

Then in hour two, it’s the special celebrating another centennial - “100 Years of Jazz Guitar.” The program, hosted by the legendary Paul himself, features music and commentary from John Scofield, George Benson, Jim Hall and journalist Bill Milkowski, along with classic tracks by DjangoReinhart, Wes Montgomery, John McLaughlin and many more.

Tuesday 6.2.15

Tonight’s Night Train focuses on soul jazz for the June Electric Guitar feature – the lively and soulful style that most often brought together electric guitar with organ and saxophone. Among the highlights:  guitarist George Benson with both Jack McDuff, and the duo of Hank Crawford and Jimmy McGriff,  a new album from drummer Steve Johns with guitarist Dave Stryker, Stryker’s new album in tribute to soul jazz great Stanley Turrentine,  and Stanley Turrentine himself with his classic version of Marvin Gaye’s “Don’t Mess with Mr. T.”

Wednesday 6.3.15

Night Train highlights more great guitars for the June Jazz Guitar feature celebrating the 100th birthday of electric guitar pioneer Les Paul. Highlights include music from Al DiMeola, Julian Lage, Bill Frisell, Kenny Burrell, the “Great Guitars” trio, Pat Martino, Lionel Loueke and Chris Flory.

Thursday 6.4.15

Night Train celebrates the birthdays of Cuban sax and clarinet master Paquito D’Rivera and band leader, arranger and composer Oliver Nelson; highlights new music from bassists Nilson Matta and Ben Williams; and continues with the June jazz guitar feature, including a trip in hour two of the show to the Savannah Music Festival for a performance from rising jazz star Julian Lage. The critically acclaimed guitarist was a major talent by the age of 8, became a member of Gary Burton’s New Quartet, and has emerged as an original and impressive leader. Lage performs both solo and in two duets with another critically acclaimed guitarist, Martin Taylor.
