Plus music from a recent compilation of vocal selections from Sun Ra & His Arkestra, a new set revisiting music of the ‘60s from violinist Mads Tolling, and the latest from Kansas City vocalist Deborah Brown.

Great guitars and tribute albums are featured tonight on the Night Train, including music from Jazz Fest headliner Pat Metheny, John Scofield’s collaboration with saxophonist Eddie Harris, guitar legend Wes Montgomery, Eric Clapton with Wynton Marsalis, and the Deep Blue Organ Trio with guitarist Bobby Broom. Plus Swingadelic’s salute to Duke Pearson, Bill Frisell’s collection of songs from John Lennon, Alan Pasqua doing music of Bill Evans, and Conrad Herwig showcasing the “Latin Side of Herbie Hancock.” And as we highlight women in jazz for Jazz Appreciation Month, there’s music from 2017 NEA Jazz Master Dee Dee Bridgewater from an album in tribute to Billie Holiday, along with music from singers Helen Merrill, Blossom Dearie and Vanessa Rubin.

Night Train marks the birthday of Herbie Hancock with music from his debut album, the River release in tribute to Joni Mitchell, and in hour two, a special that delves into his groundbreaking work in the ‘60s. Plus music from guitarists Pat Metheny and Jerry Hahn, and for the April Jazz Appreciation Month/Women in Jazz feature – music from Ella Fitzgerald and Abbey Lincoln.

Night Train heads to the west coast for some classic and contemporary sounds from that part of the country. Among the artists featured – Charles Brown, Art Pepper, the L.A. Treasure Project, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Chico Hamilton and Chet Baker.
