Global Village highlights some impressive European neo-folk groups who were among the show favorites for 2014 – the critically acclaimed Hungarian band Sondorgo, Italy’s Unavantaluna, and from Spain the Basque group Korrontzi and Basque accordionist Keja Junkera with over 200 Galician musicians on the massive Galiza project.
Tuesday January 6
Global Village marks the birthday of one of the great voices of classic English folk rock, Sandy Denny, with music she did as a solo artist and as a member of Fairport Convention and the Strawbs. Plus more of the best of 2014 – including music from the Souljazz Orchestra, Hollie Cook, and a tribute to Bunny Rugs of the reggae group, Third World, who passed away last year.
Wednesday January 7
Global Village highlights Brazilian jazz this time around – including the Stan Getz megahit “Girl from Ipanema,” two Brazilian artists who made America home – guitarist Bola Sete and pianist Jovino Santos Neto – and a Sixties bossa favorite from saxophonist Ike Quebec. Plus English folk-rock great John Martyn and the intriguing African-Nordic lineup of Monoswezi.
Thursday January 8
Tonight in the Global Village…the Afrobeat goes on, with afrobeat sounds from artists on the show’s Best of 2014 list: Tony Allen, drummer and musical director for Fela; Seun Kuti, heading up his father’s Egypt 80 band; and two contemporary bands inspired by Afrobeat, but adding their own touches to the style – London-based Yaaba Funk and Brooklyn’s Zongo Junction.
Friday January 9
Global Village highlights music from Malian kora master Ballake Sissoko, a blast from the Indonesian pop past, and some homegrown world sounds by Miami’s Spam Allstars, D.C.’s The Funk Ark, the Goat Rodeo Sessions, and some “Bad! Bossa Nova” from saxophonist Gene Ammons.
