Saturday, October 1

All Are One is the debut album from Portland, Oregon’s Sophe Lux & The Mystic, a solo vehicle for Gwynneth Haynes, former front person for the band, Sophe Lux. We’ll hear selections from that release and from Carolina, the latest by Spain.

Monday, October 3

It’s our Monday Night At The Movies feature with selections from Prince’s work on the screen. We’ll hear selections from Purple Rain, Batman and Parade, the album that served as the soundtrack to Under the Cherry Moon. Plus music from the soundtrack to the 1983 film Local Hero performed by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits. 

Tuesday, October 4

American Band is the latest release from venerable American rock band Drive-By Truckers. Whereas the band has taken time to celebrate and contemplate its Southern heritage on past releases, this time the group takes a decidedly political turn with songs such as “Once They Banned Imagine” and “Ever South.” We’ll hear selections from that recording on this episode of the show as well as music from the latest album by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. 

Wednesday, October 5

Alien Ocean is the latest release from Crushed Out. We’ll hear selections from it on this episode of the show as well as music from the new boxed set from Blonde Redhead.

Thursday, October 6

Known as both The Micronotz and The Mortal Micronotz, the Lawrence, Kansas band paved the way for a number of other local and regional punk rock acts emerging from the state in early 1980s. The Micronotz catalogue has recently been reissued. We’ll hear selections from several of those releases on this episode of the show as well as music from The Embarrassment.

Friday, October 7

It’s our New Month, New Music feature with selections from the upcoming reissues by Bright Eyes, songs from Crushed Out, Crippled Black Phoenix, Tommy ’86 and Goat. 

Saturday, October 8

Listen for selections from Kid Sister, the new release from The Time Jumpers, featuring Vince Gill, and from Spain’s Blue Moods of Spain release.

Monday, October 10

Petra Goes To The Movies is the 2013 release from Petra Haden. Known for her a capella interpretations of rock and pop classics, she tackles themes to cinematic classics such as 8 ½, A Fistful of Dollars and more. Joining her on the release are her late father, Charlie Haden and guitarist Bill Frisell. We’ll also hear selections from singer-songwriter Jackson Browne that have been featured in movies such as Taxi Driver, Fast Times at Ridgemont High and others.

Jedd Beaudoin is host/producer of the nationally syndicated program Strange Currency. He has also served as an arts reporter, a producer of A Musical Life and a founding member of the KMUW Movie Club. As a music journalist, his work has appeared in Pop Matters, Vox, No Depression and Keyboard Magazine.
