A program launched this week by President Barack Obama will give fourth graders free access to federally managed lands and waters.
Obama announced the 'Every Kid in a Park' program earlier this year as a call to action to get more children outdoors. Today more than 80 percent of American families live in urban areas with limited access to safe outdoor spaces.
The initiative includes national parks, forests, wildlife refuges and marine sanctuaries. Kids can get a printable pass by going online. The pass is valid for the 2015-16 school year and grants free entry for fourth graders and their families to more than 2,000 sites nationwide.
Kansas historical sites that are part of program include Nicodemus, Fort Larned and Brown versus the Board of Education. Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve and the Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge are also included.
