Fela Week, Music From Haiti With A Dessalines Day Special And Simon Says

Monday October 13

Global Village has more music from Haiti for the October feature, kicks off Fela Week – with music from and related to the Afrobeat legend throughout the week to mark his birthday, and it’s ‘Simon Says’ with birthday celebrations for Paul Simon, Simon Nicol and some Simon songs from Joan Armatrading and Tito Puente.

Tuesday October 14

One of the more exciting developments in both jazz and world music has been the meeting of those two genres in music created by artists from around the globe. Global Village explores some of those fusions in music from South Africa’s Hugh Masekela, Jazz Carnatica from the Arun Ramamurthy Trio, Morocco’s Majid Bekka – and from the jazz side, Medeski Scofield Martin and Wood, and Brad Goode. Plus the Haitian jazz of Mozayik for the October Haitian music feature, and Fela Birthday Week celebrations continue with his music performed by Italy’s Mamud Band.

Wednesday October 15

SPECIAL: Global Village marks the birthday of Fela, one of the true giants of African music and the creator of Afrobeat, a style that wedded strong social commentary to equally powerful African funk.  The program features classic sounds from Fela, music from his sons Femi and Seun, long-time collaborator and musical director for Fela’s band - Tony Allen, the Red hot + Fela compilation, and American and European bands inspired by the Afrobeat sound. Music from Fela is also featured throughout the week on the show.

Thursday October 16

Global Village highlights music from the Bombay Dub Orchestra, Turkish singer Cigdem Aslan, Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca, Taj Mahal with West Coast Latin rock and roots group, Los Cenzontles, a blast from the past from pioneering ‘70s Latin funk fusion group Caldera, and music from the Chopteeth Afrofunk Big Band as part of Fela Week to mark the Afrobeat legend’s birthday on October 15th.

Friday October 17

SPECIAL: Global Village marks the Haitian holiday Dessalines Day with a program devoted entirely to music from Haiti. Highlights include music from roots music bands Boukman Eksperyans and Boukan Ginen, compa pioneers Nemours Jean-Baptiste and Webert Sicot, the inspired vocal ensemble Grupo Vocal Desandann, and some impressive Haitian inspired jazz from Jacques Schwarz-Bart.
