First Day Of Spring, Nowruz, French Music And Birthdays

Monday, March 20

Spring is here! And Global Village welcomes in the new season with a wide array of artists, styles and songs celebrating the ups (and downs) of spring. Among the artists featured: Erin McKeown, Dori Caymmi, the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York, Mariza and Hugh Masekela.

Tuesday, March 21

Global Village marks the International Day of Noruz. Honored in a UN Resolution, the date was chosen to mark the celebration of Persian New Year and the arrival of spring. It has been celebrated for several thousand years and across countries spanning Central Asia, the Balkans, and the Middle East. The show highlights music from a number of countries that celebrate Noruz as a national holiday and includes both traditional and contemporary music, including some ‘70s rock-inspired releases.

Wednesday, March 22

Global Village heads to France for a wide array of sounds from that country – from traditional to contemporary French music, and some of the many artists from other parts of the globe who now call France home.  Among the artists featured – musette accordionist Michel Macias , jazz accordionist Richard Galliano, DJ and producer St. Germain, former Zawinul Syndicate member Aziz Sahmaoui, French ‘Mediterranean blues’ artist Titi Robin, Paris-based Vietnamese artists Huong Thanh & Nguyen Le, soukous star Kanda Bongo Man, and contemporary bands Lo’Jo and L’Attirail.

Thursday, March 23

Global Village celebrates birthdays of pioneering newgrass mandolinist David Grisman, Latin jazz vibes player Dave Pike, guitarist Phil Keaggy, and alt-rocker Damon Albarn (with some of his world music projects). Plus a world music classic from Manu Dibango for the March feature and new music from Steve Khan, the Frightnrs, and Bahama Soul Club.

Friday, March 24

Global Village celebrates the birthday of horn man Paul McCandless with music he did under his own name and as a founding member of the pioneering world chamber jazz group Oregon. Plus new music from the Montreal Guitare Trio, Omar Sosa with Seckou Keita, and the 25th anniversary reissue of Mickey Hart’s Planet Drum album.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show.
