Folkie Week W/ Birthdays Of Richard Thompson, Danny Thompson & Dave Swarbrick + Guitar Month

Monday, April 2

Global Village kicks off ‘Folkie Week’ with some UK Folk, including music from June Tabor, John Renbourn, and Karine Polwart - and some different approaches to folk music from Sweden, the Balkans, Canada and France. Then join us later in the week as Global Village marks birthdays of three legends of UK folk and folk rock – guitarist Richard Thompson (Tuesday), bassist Danny Thompson (Wednesday), and fiddler Dave Swarbrick (Thursday).

Tuesday, April 3

Global Village celebrates the birthday of legendary guitarist and English folk-rock pioneer Richard Thompson. We’ll hear music he did with Fairport Convention, with Linda Thompson, and with his own band, along with covers of his songs from June Tabor, Martin Simpson, the Albion Band and others.

Wednesday, April 4

Global Village marks the birthday of English folk and world bassist Danny Thompson with music he did with John Martyn, Nick Drake, the Songhai project, and Bert Jansch. We also remember legendary South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela on what would have been his 79th birthday. It’s also the birthday of Dominican pianist Michel Camilo and we’ll hear him with flamenco guitarist Tomatito on two albums they did together including the Latin Grammy winning release, Spain Forever. And there’s new music from the Malagasy Guitar Masters (for the April Guitar Month feature), Afrobeat star Femi Kuti, and contemporary Malian duo Djeneba and Fousco.

Thursday, April 5

Global Village remembers the great folk fiddler Dave Swarbrick for his birthday with music from Fairport Convention and with Martin Carthy. Plus new music from Matthews’ Southern Comfort (headed up by Iain Matthews, an early member of Fairport Convention), Stick in the Wheel, and folk super-group The Gloaming.

Friday, April 6

It’s New Month/New Music time in the Global Village. Each month, Global Village devotes an entire show to the best of recently released and forthcoming world music albums.  Among the highlights this time:

Contemporary Cape Verdean singer Nancy Vieira

Malian guitarist Sidi Toure

A preview of the second album from harpist Catrin Finch and kora player Seckou Keita

The Kora Jazz Trio

The ‘cosmic cumbia’ of Sonido Gallo Negro

Irish salsa from Baile an Salsa and traditional Irish music from Lunasa

And as we kick off the April International Guitar Month feature, the Malagasy Guitar Masters and Al DiMeola.
