Global Village highlights some influential albums–including Grammy Lifetime Achievement honoree Tito Puente’s classic Dance Mania; Salif Keita’s groundbreaking Soro album (which launched his solo international career and set new production standards for African albums); Brazil Classics I – Beleza Tropical (the release that launched the Luaka Bop label and introduced American audiences to Brazilian tropicalia music); and Paul Simon’s Graceland (which helped introduce a wider audience to music and musicians of the South African townships).

Plus Juno Award nominees Jane Bunnett & Maqueque, new music from Kirk Elliott & the Orchestra of Unmitigated Gaul, and a blast from the past from Cannibal & the Headhunters.

It’s Independence Day in the Dominican Republic and the climax of a month (!) of carnival celebrations that go on there every year. Global Village celebrates with classic and contemporary merengue and bachata from Juan Luis Guerra, Wilfredo Vargas, Luis Vargas and more. Plus new music from Red Baraat and DJ Dolores, and a couple of blasts from the past from BeatleJazz and Jesse Winchester.
