Giants Of World & African Music, Squeezebox Mania, Medievalists & New Month/New Music Time

Monday, March 28

Global Village highlights some giants of world music – including South Africa’s Mahotella Queens, reggae great Peter Tosh, English folk-rock singer/songwriter John Martyn, Chilean new song masters, Inti-Illimani, and the ‘new flamenco’ classic from the Songhai lineup.

Tuesday, March 29

A squeezebox excursion this time in the Global Village with artists and bands that feature accordions and related instruments from Italy, Serbia, Argentina, Russia, France and more – including  March featured artists Solas and 17 Hippies (from their new 20th anniversary releases).

Wednesday, March 30

African artists take center stage this time in the Global Village, with music from Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars, Congolese rhumba master Papa Noel (with French accordionist Viviane A.), Ethiojazz creator Mulatu Astatke, and Nigerian reggae star Majek Fashek. Plus some Afrobeat inspired sounds from Australia’s Liberators, and Malian music from guitarist Leni Stern.

Thursday, March 31

March 31st is Hug a Medievalist Day (really…you can read about it here and here). Global Village celebrates with music from and inspired by the Middle Ages from DOA, Kirk Elliott & the Orchestra of Unmitigated Gaul, Radio Tarifa, Trio Mediaeval, the Dufay Collective, Jordi Savall with Hesperion XXI, and more.

Friday, April 1

It’s New Month/New Music time in the Global Village. Each month, Global Village devotes an entire show to the best of new world music releases.  Among the highlights this time:

New Balkan brass sounds from the Cocek! Brass Band and from April featured artists Fanfare Ciocarlia

Anoushka Shankar’s Land of Gold

A fifth album from Tuareg guitarist Bombino

Neo-folk from Finland’s Päre

Sun Ra meets Afrobeat in Austin’s Golden Dawn Arkestra

And the new Rough Guide to a World of Psychedelia
