Monday, April 9

Global Village explores music from and inspired by Ethiopia including the groundbreaking Ethiopiques series, U.S. based singer Aster Aweke, contemporary instrumental band Qwanqwa, the father of Ethio-jazz Mulatu Astatke, and Dub Colossus. We also continue the April International Guitar Month feature with music from English folk rock singer, songwriter and guitarist John Martyn and Tuareg /desert rock guitar band Tinarawen.

Tuesday, April 10

Global Village marks birthdays of reggae artist Bunny Wailer (one of the original Wailers), leading Afro-Cuban jazz artist Omar Sosa, and exotica pioneer Martin Denny. Plus more music for the April International Guitar Month feature, this time from South Africa’s Derek Gripper, Brazil’s Luiz Bonfa, and Mali’s Oumar Konate – and new music from the South American group Che Sudaka and Cape Verde’s Lucibela.

Wednesday, April 11

In conjunction with our April World Guitar feature, Brazilian guitarists featured this time in the Global Village, including music from Baden Powell, Carlos Barbosa-Lima, Romero Lubambo, Vinicius Cantuaria (with Bill Frisell) and Chico Pinheiro (the featured artist for April’s Global Village at the Savannah Music Festival show April 30th). We’ll also hear new music from Julio Pereira, Nutopia, Sameer Gupta, the Modus Quartet, and Paa Kow.

Thursday, April 12

It’s International Day of Human Space Flight (or as it is celebrated in Russia, Cosmonaut Day) marking the first human flight in outer space by Yuri Gagarin in 1961. Global Village celebrates the occasion with some out of this world sounds from Sun Ra, The Byrds, The Bonzo Dog Band, Les Baxter, Funkadelic, Sheb Wooley, Piccola Orchestra Gagarin, and in honor of one of the first dogs sent into space, music from the Finnish rock band, Laika & the Cosmonauts.

(Strange Currency and Night Train also mark International Day of Human Space Flight tonight with space age rock and jazz.)

Friday, April 13

This time in the Global Village, for the April World Guitar feature, it’s music from Spanish guitar and guitarists. We’ll hear legendary new flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia, classical guitarist John Williams (performing Rodrigo’s famous Concerto de Arunjeuz), and folkloric guitarist Pipo Romero. Plus new music from the Italian group Alba, Moroccan group Gabacho Maroc, and Syrian musician and composer Maya Youssef.
