Global Guitars, Roots Reggae Revival, Birthdays Of Herbie Mann, Tito Puente & More

Monday, April 16

Global Village highlights music from world-jazz flutist Herbie Mann and from acoustic guitarist Stefan Grossman for their birthdays. We’ll hear Mann’s explorations of Latin, Middle Eastern and Eastern European music, and Grossman with another acclaimed traditional guitarist, John Renbourn, and as a solo artist. Plus new music from Karavan Sarai, 3MA, Samurai Accordion, and Brenda Navarrete, and as we continue our April World Guitar Month feature, music from Indian guitarist Prasanna’s tribute to Jimi Hendrix.

Tuesday, April 17

For the April Guitar Month feature, Global Village travels the globe for a fascinating array of guitar artists and styles, including two great Nigerian guitar bands led by Prince Nico and King Sunny Ade, Indian slide guitarist Debashish Bhattacharya with a tribute to Hawaiian guitarist Tau Moe, flamenco guitarist Jose ‘El Piru’ with French cellist Matthieu Saglio, Marc Ribot with his prosthetic or false Cubans, and a new album featuring three great players collectively known as the Malagasy Guitar Masters.

Wednesday, April 18

Global Village marks Independence Day of Zimbabwe with music from a number of artists from that country, including the legendary Thomas Mapfumo whose chimurenga music was an integral part of the independence movement; acclaimed singer-songwriter Oliver Mtukudzi; traditional mbira player Ephat Mujuru; one of the first major female artists to play mbira, Stella Chiweshe; and popular dance bands, the Bhundu Boys and the Four Brothers.

Thursday, April 19

Global Village highlights the roots reggae revival and some of the premier Jamaican artists who have shaped the roots renaissance recently in Jamaica, including Protoje, Jah9, Chronixx, Raging Fyah, Kabaka Pyramid, and Jesse Royal.  And for the April World Guitars feature some African guitar music from Leni Stern and the Tuareg/desert blues guitar band Imarhan.

Friday, April 20

More global guitars for the Global Village April Guitar Month feature, including eight-string guitar master Charlie Hunter with two Jamaican greats – Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith and Ernest Ranglin, Buena Vista Social Club and Los Zafiros guitarist Manuel Galban, and traditional guitarist Dean Magraw. Plus birthday salutes to Latin music legend Tito Puente and reggae star Steven Marley, and new music from Spanglish Fly, and Sly and Robbie Meet Dubmatix.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show.
