Global Steel Guitar, World Jazz Birthdays, Pulaski Memorial Day & Fri. The 13th

Monday, October 9

Global Village marks birthdays of a number of artists whose work combined elements of both jazz and world music – including Cuban pianists (and father/son) Bebo and Chucho Valdes, vibes player Dave Samuels, South African pianist Abdullah Ibrahim, and multi-instrumentalist Yusef Lateef. Plus world/jazz inspired sounds on recent releases from Brazil’s Nomade Orquestra, contemporary Korean group Black String, and Cuban singer Dayme Arocena.

Tuesday, October 10

Throughout October Global Village traces the global travels of the steel guitar, including music this time from Nigeria’s King Sunny Ade who added steel guitar to his band lineup with distinctive and enchanting results. Also this time birthday tributes to singer and songwriter Kirsty MacColl, Latin percussionist Francisco Aguabella, and Cyril Neville of the Meters and Neville Brothers – along with new music from Chicago Afrobeat Project, Stanton Moore, Lila Downs, and Bokante.

Wednesday, October 11

Global Village celebrates Pulaski Memorial Day (by Presidential proclamation in 2015) to honor the Polish Revolutionary War hero Casimir Pulaski and Polish Americans.  The program highlights a wide array of contemporary Polish bands ranging from traditional and avant-folk, to African, klezmer and jazz influenced groups. Plus American artists including Polka King Frankie Yankovic, punk polka pioneers Brave Combo, and U.S. based Polish world-jazz singer Grazyna Auguscik – along with a polka classic from Berlin’s 17 Hippies. Artists featured include Warsaw Afrobeat Orchestra, Maria Pomianowska & Groupe Gainde, Janusz Prusinowski Trio, Kapela Maliszow, Tegie Chlopy, Motion Trio and Jarek Bester.

Thursday, October 12

Global Village highlights classic artists and recordings from the ‘Golden Age of African Music,’ the period roughly between the late ‘50s and the early ‘80s when musicians across the continent, inspired by independence, electronic instruments, and fusions with Western and other influences, created a vast body of innovative work. We’ll hear a classic from Geraldo Pino, South African bandleader and producer West Nkosi, soukous giant Franco and more.

Friday, October 13

No triskaidekaphobia in the Global Village! It’s a “lucky” Friday the 13th with good luck songs from Joan Armatrading, Lene Lovich, and South African reggae great Lucky Dube. Plus music from South Africa’s Miriam Makeba and the Mahotella Queens, and Brazil’s Bebel Gilberto and Nilson Matta.
