The mayor of Goddard is a step closer to becoming a candidate in the Sedgwick County Commission race to represent the 3rd District.
Marcey Gregory submitted a petition to the Sedgwick County Election Office to run as an independent in the commission’s 3rd District race.
She turned in more than 3000 signatures, about 500 more than what was needed.
Gregory says gathering signatures the past three months put her in touch with voters.
"I’m hearing a lot of people saying that they are signing because I’m running as an independent," she says. "They’re very frustrated with both parties not being able to compromise, and not being able to get anything done."
Gregory says voters in Goddard, Cheney, Andale, Colwich and west Wichita signed her petition.
The Election Office has until Thursday to certify the signatures.
If she becomes an official candidate, Gregory will face the winner of the August 2 Republican primary in the November General Election.
The primary race is between current commissioner Karl Peterjohn, who is trying for a third term, and challenger David Dennis, who is a retired teacher and Air Force Colonel.
This is the second time Gregory is campaigning to be the Sedgwick County Commissioner for the 3rd District. Back in 2008, she ran as a Democrat and lost to Peterjohn in the general election.
Gregory has served as Goddard’s mayor for nine years. Her term expires in November 2017. She owned a small retail business for 25 years and currently runs a property management business.
