Tuesday, December 1

We commemorate World AIDS Day with selections from Arthur Russell, John Grant, Queen, David Byrne, Lou Reed and many other artists who have written about and/or lived with HIV/AIDS.

Wednesday, December 2

One of the most anticipated magazines for music lovers is Oxford American’s annual Southern Music Issue. This year the magazine and its accompanying music compilation focus on the sounds of Georgia. We will as well on this episode of Strange Currency with selections from James Brown, Dropsonic, Drive-By Truckers, Gram Parsons, Allman Brothers Band and many others. 

Thursday, December 3

Released in 2005, Gimme Fiction was the fifth LP from Texas band Spoon. Within a short span of time it became one of the most discussed albums of that year and shortly thereafter one of the most beloved of its decade. We’ll hear selections from it on this episode of the show as well as music from Lou Reed’s New York album. 

Friday, December 4

It’s our New Month, New Music feature with selections from the new career-spanning boxed set by German band Harmonia as well as selections from new releases by Emitt Rhodes, Spain and others.

Saturday, December 5

Known primarily for a seemingly endless string of Top 40 hits in the 1980s, Journey started off its life as a much different band, touching on elements of rock and jazz fusion. We’ll hear selections from the band’s self-titled debut album, released years before Steve Perry joined the band and not long after the core members had left Santana. We’ll also hear selections from Nils Lofgren’s classic live LP Night After Night.

Monday, December 7

An undisputed pioneer in the world of jazz bass, Jaco Pastorius is the subject of a new documentary, produced by Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo. Simply titled Jaco: The Film it chronicles Pastorius’s rise to fame and his struggles with mental illness and homelessness. We’ll hear selections from the film’s soundtrack as well music featuring Pastorius, who died in 1987. 

Tuesday, December 8

John Lennon was murdered on this day in 1980. We’ll look back at his career as a Beatle and solo artist as well as at his musical legacy on this episode of the show.

Wednesday, December 9

Released in 1970 Loaded was the final studio album from the Lou Reed-fronted version of the Velvet Underground and, arguably, the band’s best. We’ll hear selections from it on this episode of the show as well as cover versions of some of the songs that appear on the album.

Thursday, December 10

Released in 1973 Squeeze was the fifth and final album from the Velvet Underground and featured no original members. Long dismissed by fans, critics and original band members alike, the album has recently earned a cult following. We’ll hear selections from it as well as from Lou Reed’s Transformer LP.

Friday, December 11

Bobby and The Midnites was a short-lived band led by the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir and featuring drummer Billy Cobham and Grateful Dead keyboardist Brent Mydland. We’ll hear from the band’s 1981 self-titled debut as well as from The Stone Poneys, featuring Linda Ronstadt.

Saturday, December 12

Buck ‘Em: The Music Of Buck Owens Volume 2 is the latest compilation spotlighting the long career of Americana music legend Buck Owens. We’ll hear selections from that release as well as music from Something More Than Free the 2015 release from Jason Isbell. 

Monday, December 14

Emerging from Andy Warhol’s factory, The Velvet Underground recorded one album with German model and singer Nico. That record, despite selling poorly upon its release in 1967, has become one of the most influential records of all time. We’ll hear selections from it on this episode of the show as well as selections from Lou Reed’s Coney Island Baby.

Tuesday, December 15

We’ll hear selections from the self-titled release by Reeves Gabrels and His Imaginary Friends as well as music from The Cure’s Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me.
