Grammy Lifetime Achievement Honorees, Latin Soul & An Early Valentine

Monday, February 9

Several generations of soukous are featured this time in the Global Village – from the ‘father of Congolese music’ Le Grand Kalle to one of the giants of the music, Tabu Ley Rochereau , to one of the later stars, Sam Mangwana, and a new group reviving the classic sound, Black Bazar. Plus Bill Frisell, Willie Bobo, Steely Dan, and some rockin’ twist music from ‘60s Spain.

Tuesday, February 10

Global Village highlights more Grammy Lifetime Achievement recipients (the February feature) – this time with music of Harry Belafonte, Antonio Carlos Jobim, George Harrison and Dizzy Gillespie– plus birthday salutes to Brazilian pianist and composer Antonio Adolfo and zydeco star Rockin’ Dopsie.

Wednesday, February 11

Latin soul and boogaloo takes center stage this time in the Global Village with classics from Mongo Santamaria and Pucho & the Latin Soul Brothers–rarities, including music from the new Rough Guide to Latin Rare Groove, Volume 2 – and Latin soul versions of songs from James Brown and the Temptations – for the February feature highlighting music from Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipients.

Thursday, February 12

Global Village highlights some unusual musical pairings this time around, including bluesman Taj Mahal with kora player Toumani Diabate; Buena Vista Social Club bassist Cachaito with South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela; jazz bassist Charlie Haden with Portuguese guitar pioneer Carlos Paredes; and sitar great Ravi Shankar with violin master Yehudi Menuhin.

Friday, February 13

SPECIAL: Hearts and flowers in the Global Village, in an early celebration of Valentine’s Day with love songs from around the world – including music from Bob Marley & the Wailers, Bebel Gilberto, Richard Thompson and even a little polka love song.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show.
