Night Train celebrates the birthdays of pianist Oscar Peterson and drummer Stix Hooper (of the Crusaders), kicks off a week-long celebration of Brazilian jazz in honor of the Olympics (including music this time from Klaus Mueller’s new album, Village Samba), and continues with more music from August featured artist Kenny Burrell – with a track from one of his best recordings, Ellington is Forever.

Birthday salutes tonight on the Night Train for pianists Bill Evans and Mal Waldron, singer Mary Stallings, and drummer Cecil Brooks III. Plus more music from August featured artist Kenny Burrell, this time as a leader, with Gene Ammons and with the Prestige All Stars (including John Coltrane and Mal Waldron). And more Brazilian sounds – as Night Train highlights jazz from and inspired by that country throughout the week – tonight including new music from guitarist Sergio Pereira.

Plus more in a week-long salute to Brazilian Jazz and a month-long feature of music from guitarist Kenny Burrell, and new music from guitarist Andy Brown and the Branford Marsalis Quartet with Kurt Elling.

Night Train celebrates the musical friendship of August featured artist Kenny Burrell and fellow Detroiter and jazz piano legend Tommy Flanagan with a variety of releases featuring the two together (with a few other great players, like John Coltrane and Coleman Hawkins, as well). Plus, the week-long salute to Brazilian jazz wraps up with a newly released album marking the return of Brazilian singer Kenia, and Tommy Flanagan doing the Barry Harris composition, “Nascimento.”
