Gregg Allman & Stax Classics

June 9/11

Crossroads kicks off a dual feature for June this time, paying tribute to Gregg Allman with the blues-influenced music he did as a solo artist and with the Allman Brothers Band, and also highlighting the sounds of Memphis Soul, classic and contemporary.

For this visit to the Crossroads, it’s music from newly released compilations to kick off the 60th anniversary of the legendary Memphis label, Stax Records. Featured are Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, Sam & Dave, and Booker T. & the MG’s.

Plus Memphis-inspired recent recordings from Amy Black, Ronnie Baker Brooks and Melissa Etheridge, concert previews and, in hour two of the show, a House of Blues Special on Memphis exploring the soul sounds of Stax and Hi Records, classic Memphis roots of rock and blues music, and some contemporary sounds coming from the city as well.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
