Hear New Music From Drive-By Truckers, Haden Triplets, And Classics From Harry Nilsson, The Beatles

All Week: Hear the new song from Drive-By Truckers, “Pauline Hawkins,” from the upcoming release English Oceans.

Monday, February 3: Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls has just issued her fifth studio solo album, Goodnight Tender. The album is a culmination of her many different influences, from the music of her native Georgia (Allman Brothers), to classic Americana (the Carter Family) and gospel. We’ll hear from that release as well as selections from Fifth, the latest release by the Autumn Defense, featuring John Stirratt and Pat Sansone of Wilco.

Tuesday, February 4The Stone is the latest release from Minneapolis-born musician Andre Cymone. Cymone was a member of Prince’s backing band for many years and scored a top 10 hit in 1981 with the Prince-penned “The Dance Electric.” He went on to work as a producer and writer, working with Adam Ant, Jody Watley, and Pebbles. His first album under his own name is titled The Stone. We’ll hear from that on this episode of Strange Currency as well as This Is Where We Are, the latest release from synthpop singer-songwriter Priscilla Ahn.

Wednesday, February 5Let’s Fly A Kite is the latest release from Los Angeles based singer-songwriter Eleni Mandell. Mandell has been releasing albums since the late 1990s and has collaborated with members of Wilco, Los Lobos, and Atoms For Peace. We’ll hear from that recording as well as from Sounds That Can’t Be Made the latest release by British progressive rock band Marillion.

Thursday, February 6The Point was a 1971 ABC Movie of the Week, created by singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson; it tells the story of Oblio, who must wear a pointed hat to conceal his “pointless” head in a world where everything has a point. Banished from his homeland, Oblio and his dog Arrow spend a night in the Pointless Forrest, then returns to reveal an astonishing secret. We’ll hear selections from the soundtrack album by Nilsson as well as music from The Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night.

Friday, February 7: It’s our New Month, New Music feature with selections from Les Claypool’s Duo De Twang, Mogwai, The Haden Triplets, Drive-By Truckers, and more.

Saturday, February 8: Petra, Rachel, and Tanya Haden are the daughters of American bass legend Charlie Haden. They’ve also just released their debut album, produced by Ry Cooder. The sisters have collectively and individually contributed to songs recorded by Foo Fighters, Beck, Weezer, Green Day, and Todd Rundgren. We’ll hear from their self-titled release as well as from the new self-titled release from Oxford, Mississippi’s Water Liars.
