Hispanic Heritage Month, Mexican Independence Day & Global Brass Bands

Monday September 12

Global Village celebrates the birthday of world-jazz percussionist Adam Rudolph with music from his Moving Pictures and Go: Organic Orchestra projects, and guest appearances with Shadowfax and Leni Stern – plus more brass bands for the September feature, this time including the Gangbe Brass Band from Benin and the U.S. based, Balkan inspired Raya Brass Band – and new music from London’s contemporary classical meets world ensemble, the iyatra Quartet, and a new Haitian compilation Tanbou Toujou Lou.

Tuesday September 13

In a special edition of Global Village we pay tribute to three talented world music artists who passed away recently – digeridoo player Graham Wiggins, who was part of both Outback and Dr. Didg; Jamaican ska pioneer and legend Prince Buster; and jazz harmonica player and Brazilian music aficionado, Toots Thielemans.

Wednesday September 14

Global Village marks birthdays of saxophonist, producer and Los Lobos member Steve Berlin, legendary Cuban bassist and composer Cachao, and saxophonist Oliver Lake – showcases the great Romanian brass band Fanfare Ciocarlia for the September brass band feature - and highlights vintage K-Pop by way of the French quintet Baeshi Bang, and Peruvian chicha by way of Austin’s Money Chicha.

Thursday September 15

SPECIAL: Global Village celebrates the start of Hispanic Heritage Month with a program devoted entirely to the wide range of Latin sounds and artists that have helped shape American music. Latin jazz, soul and rock are all featured, including some of the legends of the music - among them Machito, Mongo Santamaria, Los Lobos, and Santana – plus rare sides from Joe King Carrasco, Flash & the Dynamics and more.

Friday September 16

SPECIAL:  Global Village celebrates Mexican Independence Day with music from Mexico – including a wide variety of regional styles, both traditional and contemporary sounds, and American artists of Mexican heritage. Among the artists featured are Café Tacuba, Maldita Vecindad, Lila Downs, Sones de Mexico and Esquivel.
