Holidays! Mardi Gras, Valentine’s, National Flag Of Canada Day & Chinese New Year

Monday, February 12

Global Village highlights music from one of the artists featured in this month’s Global Village at the Savannah Music Festival Special (airing the last week of the month), acclaimed Malian kora player Ballake Sissoko. We’ll hear music from his critically acclaimed Chamber Music album with cellist Vincent Segal (also featured in the Festival Special), an early import release he did under his own name, and guest appearances with such diverse artists as Italian minimalist Ludovico Einaudi, bluesman Taj Mahal, and Cuban guitarist (and Buena Vista Social Club member) Manuel Galban.

Tuesday, February 13

It’s carnival time in the Global Village! To celebrate Fat Tuesday, Global Village heads to some carnival hot spots: Brazil for some samba, Trinidad for calypso and steel drum music, and the Crescent City for the Mardi Gras Indian group Wild Tchoupitoulas, and such New Orleans favorites as Professor Longhair, the Hawketts, and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

(Strange Currency and Night Train celebrate Mardi Gras tonight as well)

Wednesday, February 14

Hearts and flowers in the Global Village, in celebration of Valentine’s Day, with love songs from around the world, including from the duos of Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto, and Celso Fonseca & Ronaldo Bastos for the February duos feature, along with music from Bob Marley & the Wailers, Bebel Gilberto, Bill Withers, Richard Thompson, and even a little polka love song.

(Strange Currency and Night Train also have special Valentine’s Day features tonight).

Thursday, February 15

Global Village celebrates National Flag of Canada Day (marking the date in 1965 when the Maple Leaf flag was adopted) with music from winners and nominees from this past fall’s Canadian Folk Music Awards, and the newly named Juno Awards nominees. We’ll hear traditional and contemporary folk, Latin, Caribbean, Inuit and other sounds from some of Canada’s most inspired contemporary artists and groups – including Cassie & Maggie, Maz, Beyond the Pale, Jayme Stone, Hilario Duran, Louis Simao, Roberto Lopez, The Battle of Santiago, Bruce Cockburn, Briga, and The Jerry Cans.

Friday, February 16

Happy New Year! Global Village celebrates Chinese New Year, Tet (Vietnam), Seollal (Korea), Losar (Tibet), or the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival. We’ll highlight traditional (Heart of the Dragon Ensemble), world fusion (Gao Hong and Yo-Yo Ma & the Silk Road Ensemble) and contemporary pop (Sa Dingding) from China, along with music from Taiwanese neo-folk ensemble A Moving Sound, Tibetan artist Yungchen Lhamo, Vietnamese pop singer Carol Kim, the adventurous world-jazz duo of Huong Thanh and  Nguyen Le, and more to mark the holiday.
