'Home On The Range' House Gets A Makeover

Restoration work will wrap up soon on the 140-year-old cabin where Dr. Brewster M. Higley wrote the state song, "Home on the Range."

The cabin in Athol, Kan., has been totally reconstructed with the exception of two walls.

The stone wall on the north side was disassembled and rebuilt, using what good stones were left. The rest of the stones came from the area.

On the south side, workers removed the oak and walnut logs, then cleaned and anchored to end walls using a series of nails and dowel rods. Crews also are rebuilding the roof and planning landscaping and a nature trail.

The official dedication won't happen until October 2014.

See photos of the cabin on the project's Facebook page.
