A mixed bag this time in the Global Village with music from the Bombay Dub Orchestra, Chopteeth Afrofunk Big Band, Turkish singer Cigdem Aslan, Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca, Taj Mahal with West Coast Latin rock and roots group Los Cenzontles, and a blast from the past from pioneering ‘70s Latin funk fusion group Caldera.
Tuesday, December 8
Global Village devotes the show to new Latin releases – from Afro- Cuban to contemporary Latin rock, Latin jazz and Afro-Latin music. Artists featured include legendary pianist Chucho Valdes with his tribute to Irakere, the pioneering Cuban band he co-founded; U.S. based cumbia, boogaloo, and Latin rock bands Xixa, Grupo Fantasma and Spanglish Fly; acclaimed Spanish singer Buika; bassist and jazz educator Carlos Henriquez; and Amadou Balake and Orchestra Baobab – African artists who incorporated Cuban influences into their work.
Wednesday, December 9
Global Village marks birthdays of Joan Armatrading and Dan Hicks; highlights an African project with the Moroccan group Dar Gnawa from recently named 2016 NEA Jazz Master Archie Shepp; and features new releases from Somaliland’s Sahra Halgan Trio, Brazil’s Bixiga 70, and the trio of Stanley Clarke, Jean-Luc Ponty and Bireli Lagrene.

It’s Human Rights Day – marking the anniversary of the U.N. adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – and Global Village marks the occasion with music from around the world in celebration and support of human rights. Highlights include music from Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, the Listen to the Banned compilation, Femi Kuti, and Toots Hibbert of Toots & the Maytals (who was also born on this date).
