An independent candidate is running for the Kansas House.
Marco Giorgi was certified last month in the race for House District 87 in Wichita. The retired naval flight officer will face Democrat Tonya Howard and Republican Roger Elliott in November’s general election. Republican lawmaker Mark Kahrs did not seek re-election.
Giorgi says he’s concerned that Republicans and Democrats in the House haven’t solved Kansas' budget issues.
“If both parties were going to be able to fix this problem, they would have done it by now," he says. "They’ve been there for 4 years and they’ve done nothing, as far as I'm concerned.”
Giorgi says it was his concerns with the budget that spurred him to run. He says it's a "sign of a healthy democracy" to have three candidates in the race for District 87.
So far, Giorgi is the only independent candidate for the state Legislature. Two independent Kansas candidates--Miranda Allen and Alan LaPolice--are running for seats in the U.S. House.
