International Women’s Day, Global Fiddles, Euro Neo Folk And New Sounds From Poland

Monday, March 7

Some global fiddles this time in the Global Village, with music from All-Ireland Fiddle champion Liz Carroll, Quartet San Francisco, Kronos Quartet with Vietnamese composer and performer Van-Ahn Vanessa Vo, and Celtic viol from early music master Jordi Savall.

Tuesday, March 8

Global Village celebrates International Women’s Day with music from female artists from around the world – including Cape Verde’s barefoot diva Cesaria Evora, the Queen of Salsa Celia Cruz, Mali’s acclaimed Oumou Sangare, fado star Mariza, African vocal group Zap Mama, and rock icon Marianne Faithfull.

Wednesday, March 9

Global Village highlights some impressive neo-folk groups from Europe including the critically acclaimed Hungarian band Sondorgo, Italy’s Unavantaluna, Finnish accordionist Maria Kalaniemi, and from Spain, the Basque group Korrontzi and Basque accordionist Kepa Junkera with over 200 Galician musicians on the massive Galiza project.

Thursday, March 10

In a special edition of Global Village, a trip to Poland for music from a wide array of contemporary bands ranging from traditional and avant-folk, to African, klezmer and jazz influenced bands. Plus some American artists – including Polka King Frankie Yankovic, punk polka pioneers Brave Combo, and U.S. based Polish world-jazz singer Grazyna Auguscik – along with a polka classic from March featured artists, 17 Hippies. Artists featured include Warsaw Afrobeat Orchestra, Maria Pomianowska & Groupe Gainde, Janusz Prusinowski Trio, Kapela Maliszow, Tegie Chlopy, Motion Trio and Jarek Bester.

Friday, March 11

Global Village marks birthdays of versatile vocalist Bobby McFerrin and New Tango creator Astor Piazzolla. Plus more music from March featured artists 17 Hippies and Solas  – new music from Eva Salina’s acclaimed new Balkan project, Lema Lema, and Chilean New Song greats, Inti Illimani – and a track from Angelique Kidjo’s Grammy winning album, Sings.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
