Saturday, July 2

Will Oldham has recorded under the name Bonnie “Prince” Billy for over a decade now, creating an eclectic array of songs and albums that cover a broad range of genres. We’ll hear from a recently reissued EP he made for the Temporary Residence label more than a decade ago. Titled More Revery and released under the name Bonny Billy the release features Oldham tackling songs from writers such as John Phillips (The Mamas and The Papas) and country star Tim McGraw. We’ll hear selections from that release as well as music from Jeff Beck’s Emotion & Commotion.

We celebrate Independence Day with music from X, Steve Vai, Grand Funk Railroad, and more. 

Tuesday, July 5

Van Morrison is renowned as a dynamic live performer, something well documented by his classic live LP It’s Too Late to Stop Now recorded during his 1973 American tour. The record has been reissued with three additional shows added to the original release. We’ll hear selections from this new boxed set as well as selections from Jeff Beck’s classic Wired release.

Wednesday, July 6

Man Machine Poem is the latest release from Canada’s The Tragically Hip. The record may be the band’s last as vocalist Gordon Downie was diagnosed with brain cancer just months before the record’s release. The band has cautioned listeners against hearing the album as a meditation on Downie’s illness as the record was written before he became ill. We’ll hear selections from this release as well as from Blow Your Cool! the 1987 release from Australia’s Hoodoo Gurus. 

Thursday, July 7

Released in 1969, the self-titled debut album by Santana features many of the songs that would come to form the core of the group’s classic sound, including “Evil Ways,” “Jingo” and “Soul Sacrifice.” We’ll hear selections from that album on this episode of the show as well as music from Jeff Beck’s mid-1970s classic Blow by Blow.

Listen for selections from Jeff Beck’s upcoming release Loud Hailer as well as music from Joe Satriani’s 1987 LP Surfing with The Alien.
