Jazz Fest Artists & Jazz Legends Charles Lloyd, Tommy Flanagan & Roy Haynes for the Birthdays

Monday 3.13.17

Night Train marks birthdays of legendary drummer Roy Haynes and trumpeters Terence Blanchard and Blue Mitchell. Plus more music from Wichita Jazz Festival artists for the March feature – including Pat Metheny (guesting with Roy Haynes and Joshua Redman) and also from Sun Ra, the subject of an author event and film at this year’s Fest. Night Train highlights music from a newly released live set from Sun Ra & the Arkestra in hour one, and a Jazz Profiles special about him in hour two of the show.

Tuesday 3.14.17

Birthday salutes to organist Shirley Scott (including a special in hour two), singers Mark Murphy and Vanessa Rubin, and drummer Akira Tana tonight on the Night Train. Plus new music from Joshua Redman with Brad Mehldau, Chris Hazelton’s Boogaloo 7, and John Beasley’s Monkestra.

Wednesday 3.15.17

Night Train marks the birthday of jazz saxophone great Charles Lloyd with an new single he’s released with Lucinda Williams, music from one of his classic ECM titles, and a special in hour two about his breakthrough success in the ‘60s. Plus more music from Wichita Jazz Festival artists for the March feature – this time from Pat Metheny, and the Kandinsky Effect – new music from Dizzy Gillespie and Steve Khan, and salutes to both Larry Coryell and Dave Valentin.

Thursday 3.16.17

Night Train marks the birthday of jazz piano great Tommy Flanagan with music he did with Ella Fitzgerald and John Coltrane in hour one, and a Jazz Profiles special in hour two. Plus more music from Wichita Jazz Festival artists – tonight Deborah Brown and Pat Metheny – and remembering Latin jazz flute master Dave Valentin.
