Night Train celebrates the birthdays of guitar great Wes Montgomery, Brazilian singer Flora Purim, and and ‘The King of Western Swing’ Bob Wills (including a special about Wills in hour two of the show). Plus a previously unreleased live set from guitarist Dennis Coffey, one of the Motown ‘Funk Brothers,’ and new albums from guitarist Steve Khan and trombonist Nick Finzer – and we continue the March Jazz Fest feature with music from drummer Matt Wilson.

A concert night tonight on the Night Train with music from several artists with regional concerts in the coming week, and from artists appearing at the Wichita Jazz Festival this year (the March feature on the Night Train). Among the Jazz Fest artists highlighted tonight are guitartist Pat Metheny, and also singer Deborah Brown – she has a new album out and is among the artists featured in a European Jazz Stage special in hour two of the show. Plus new music from Chris Thile with Brad Mehldau, and from Bob Dorough.

Night Train teams up with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate International Women’s Day with Women Artists in Jazz: Then and Now. In hour one, it’s some of the latest releases from female jazz artists, including harpist Carol Robbins, baritone saxophonist Claire Daly, cellist Akua Dixon, trumpeter Carol Moran, and singers Carmen Lundy, Virginia Schenck, and one of the artists appearing at the 2017 Wichita Jazz Festival, Deborah Brown. Then in hour two, it’s a special that looks back at Jazz Women of the ‘40s.

Night Train marks the birthdays of singer Keely Smith and of free jazz pioneer Ornette Coleman (including a special performance of Coleman music from saxophonist Dewey Redman in hour two of the show). Plus more music from 2017 Wichita Jazz Festival artists, the March Night Train feature, including music from Pat Metheny, and guest appearances from bassist Martin Wind and Matt Wilson (who will perform with Metheny at the Festival) on albums from Bill Mays and Ken Peplowski.
