Jazz Noir And Jazz Birthdays On The Night Train

Monday 10.27.14

Night Train marks birthdays of Belgian guitarist Philip Catherine and Norwegian bassist Arild Andersen. Plus more jazz noir for the October feature – including music from Duke Ellington’s score for Anatomy of a Murder, and the theme from the film noir classic, Double Indemnity, from the Jazz at the Movies Band – also two impressive new duet albums from Charlie Haden with Jim Hall, and Kenny Barron with Dave Holland.

Tuesday 10.28.14

Night Train celebrates a number of jazz birthdays tonight – including singers Andy Bey (who has a new album out), Jay Clayton and Barbara Sfraga, guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, and bassist Richard Bona and Glen Moore from the group Oregon. Plus more jazz noir (including Miles Davis music from “Elevator to the Gallows” and Bobby McFerrin’s salute to Marlowe), and new music from Jimmy Cobb, Roseanna Vitro, Bob Stewart and Conrad Herwig’s Latin Side project.

Wednesday 10.29.14

Night Train heads to the west coast for the October Jazz Noir feature to highlight some classic and contemporary sounds from that part of the country. Among the artists featured – Charles Brown, Art Pepper, the L.A. Treasure Project, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Chico Hamilton and Chet Baker.

Plus new music from legendary Latin jazz percussionist Candido, the Craig Scott Quintet, Bobby Broom, and Cyrus Chestnut.

Thursday 10.30.14

Night Train marks birthdays of Latin jazz & soul star Poncho Sanchez, trumpet great Clifford Brown, and percussionist Trilok Gurtu. Plus a final night for the October Jazz Noir feature – with music from Charlie Haden Quartet West, the theme from The Naked City and Central Avenue saxophone great Teddy Edwards. Also new music from saxophonist Paul Carr, accordion master Richard Galliano, Afro Bop Alliance and Bob Mamet.
