Night Train celebrates the birthday of Laurens Hammond – the inventor of the Hammond organ – with a program devoted to some great jazz organ sounds – from classic records from Charles Earland and Jimmy Smith, to new releases from Joey DeFrancesco, OJT, Michael Kocour and Joey DeFrancesco, along with 2015 show favorites (the Night Train January feature) Mike LeDonne, Ben Paterson, Dave Stryker, and John Ellis & Double Wide.

Night Train celebrates the centennial birthday of one of the great figures of Kansas City jazz, Jay McShann – with music he did with guitarists John Scofield and T Bone Walker and singer Jimmy Witherspoon featured in hour one, and a Jazz Profiles special about his life and music in hour two of the show. Plus more of the Best of 2015, the January Night Train feature, with music from show favorites, Grammy nominees and NPR Jazz Critics Poll winners, including Katie Thiroux, the John Fedchock New York Big Band, Oran Etkin and more.

Night Train marks birthdays of trombonist and arranger Melba Liston and adds a little trombone extravaganza with additional music from 2015 Night Train favorite Steve Davis, a new album from Michael Deese, and J.J. Johnson performing with the other jazz birthday artist, guitarist Joe Pass. Plus more Best of 2015 with Night Train favorites Steve Davis and the Maria Schneider Orchestra, and 2015 Latin Grammy nominee Antonio Adolfo.
