Jazz Records In The 2016 Grammy Hall Of Fame, Birthday Salutes To Paul Desmond, Teddy Wilson & More

This week on Night Train, we'll look at jazz records in the 2016 Grammy Hall of Fame, we'll have birthday salutes to Paul Desmond, Teddy Wilson and more, and we'll continue our celebration of the November featured artist Billy Strayhorn. And here's a bonus--read Chris Heim's book review of Strayhorn: An Illustrated Life edited by A. AlyceClaerbaut and David Schlesinger. Here are the daily details for the week:

Monday 11.23.15: Night Train highlights tribute albums this evening – including music celebrating November featured artist Billy Strayhorn, along with salutes to Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Wes Montgomery, Eberhard Weber, and composers Jerome Kern, and Rodgers & Hammerstein. Plus music from Gary Burton, Pharoah Sanders and Archie Shepp – also featured throughout November to celebrate their recent \ 2016 NEA Jazz Masters awards - and new music from flutist Andrea Brachfeld, bassists Ray Martinez and Christian McBride, singer Karrin Allyson, and drummer Luis Munoz.

Tuesday 11.24.15: Night Train highlights music from the jazz recordings that were just named to the 2016 Grammy Hall of Fame; continues the November feature of music from Billy Strayhorn and the newly named 2016 NEA Jazz Masters; marks birthdays of organist Brian Charette, saxophonist Al Cohn, drummer Yoron Israel, and pianist Teddy Wilson; and highlights new music from Houston Person, Steve Davis, Don Braden, and the lineup of Stanley Clark, BireliLagrene and Jean-Luc Ponty.

Wednesday 11.25.15: Night Train celebrates birthdays of singers June Christy and Etta Jones, saxophonists Rusty Bryant and Paul Desmond, and cornet player Nat Adderley. It’s also the birthday of trumpeter Terell Stafford. We highlight music from his album in tribute to November featured artist Billy Strayhorn, and in hour two of the show, head to the Savannah Music Festival for a Late Night Jam with Stafford, the Christian McBride Trio, Wycliffe Gordon, Cyrus Chestnut and more. Plus new music from Kenny Burrell, Scott Hamilton with the Jeff Hamilton Trio, and the New Mastersounds.

Thursday 11.26.15: Night Train joins with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate Thanksgiving with a menu packed with musical goodies all about food – from the turkey and sweet potatoes to a host of holiday desserts.
