Night Train celebrates International Women’s Day with a program devoted to women artists in jazz – singers and instrumentalists, classic recordings and new releases, legends and rising stars. Among the artists featured: Dee Dee Bridgewater, Marian McPartland, Regina Carter, Renee Rosnes, Kim Nalley, Champian Fulton, Bria Skonberg, Anat Cohen, and Cecile McLorin Salvant.

Wednesday 3.9.16

Night Train marks birthdays of singer Keely Smith and free jazz pioneer Ornette Coleman (including music from his classic Something Else album and a later project with Prime Time, along with a special, The Ornette Coleman Songbook, in hour two of the show). Plus more music from March featured artist Joe Lovano, and new releases from Latin Jazz trombonist Doug Beavers, funk fusion band Big Picture Holiday, and Ray Vega with Thomas Marriott.

Thursday 3.10.16

Night Train celebrates birthdays of blues guitarist Ronnie Earl, Indian table player Zakir Hussain, and Brazilian singer Carol Saboya; continues with more music from March featured artist Joe Lovano, including work he did with the John Scofield Quartet and Latin jazz percussionist Ray Barretto, along with two quartet lineups recorded live at the Village Vanguard; and highlights new music from La Orquesta Sinfonietta, Hammond B3 player Adam Scone, drummer Herlin Riley and a previously unreleased live set from Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
