Joe Sample & Kenny Wheeler Tributes, John Coltrane's Birthday & Sept. Featured Artist Jane Bunnett

Monday 9.22.14

Tonight on the Night Train, it’s ‘new standards’ – contemporary songs in a jazz setting – from Dr. Lonnie Smith, Charles Lloyd, the World Saxophone Quartet, Brian Ho, and the Jazz Soul Seven with jazz versions of music from Jimi Hendrix, Nick Drake, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Amy Winehouse, Curtis Mayfield, Johnny Cash and more.

Tuesday 9.23.14

Night Train marks birthdays of the legendary Ray Charles, singer Irene Reid, and pianists Les McCann and Albert Ammons. It’s also the birthday of jazz giant John Coltrane. Along with music from Coltrane in hour one, hour two of the show offers a Coltrane special with music and interviews with Coltrane biographer Lewis Porter and son Ravi Coltrane. Also new music from Cyrus Chestnut and the Miami Jazz Project and more from September featured artist Jane Bunnett.

Wednesday 9.24.14

Night Train marks birthdays of singer Herb Jeffries, vibes player Jay Hoggard, and “Mr. Bongo” – Jack Costanzo. It’s also the birthday of Wayne Henderson, trombonist with the Crusaders – and Night Train features music from him along with band mate Joe Sample, who just passed away.  The show also pays tribute to trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, who also recently passed away, highlights more music from September featured artist Jane Bunnett (who is also the subject of a special this Friday night at 7 on Global Village), and spotlights new music from The Latin Side of Joe Henderson, Bob Stewart, Cyrille Aimee, and Paquito D’Rivera’s Jazz Meets the Classics.

Thursday 9.25.14

Night Train marks the birthday of funky jazz organist Barbara Dennerlein;  continues with more music from September featured artist Jane Bunnett (who is also the subject of a special this Friday night at 7 on Global Village); remembers both Joe Sample and Kenny Wheeler who recently passed away;  and highlights new music from Bob Mamet (playwright David’s brother), the trombone lineup Band of Bones, drummer Jimmy Cobb and a preview of an album of a previously unreleased performance from Charlie Haden and Jim Hall that will be released next week.
