John Holt Week, More From Haiti, A Trip To The Caribbean And A Halloween Extravaganza

Monday October 27

Global Village heads to the Caribbean for music from countries in or bordering the Caribbean Sea – including Jamaica (the Paragons with John Holt, Bob Marley & the Wailers), Mexico (Sones de Mexico), the Dominican Republic (Francisco Ulloa), Barbados (Coalishun), Trinidad (the steel drum classic, Pan Rising, from Ritmos Unidos), and for the October Haitian music feature, a new release from the country-compas band, Boulpik, and from Sweet Micky.

Tuesday October 28

Global Village marks birthdays of South African singer and band leader Busi Mhlongo, Cameroonian singer and bassist Richard Bona, and bassist Glen Moore – cofounder of the pioneering world chamber jazz group, Oregon. Plus new music from Playing for Change 3, Afrobeat legend Tony Allen, and Grand Fatilla.

Wednesday October 29

Global Village highlights some Latin jazz and soul sounds from a number of masters including “El Rey” Tito Puente, percussionist Willie Bobo, pianist Eddie Palmieri, vibes player Cal Tjader, flutist Herbie Mann, and Brazilian soul pioneer Tim Maia.

Thursday October 30

Global Village celebrates birthdays of two master percussionists – Indian world-fusion artist Trilok Gurtu, and Latin jazz and soul conguero Poncho Sanchez. Plus more in our tribute to reggae singer John Holt and for the October Haitian music feature.

Friday October 31

HALLOWEEN SPECIAL: Global Village teams up with Strange Currency and Crossroads for an evening of music tricks and treats, ghosts and goblins, and lots of spirited and scary sounds.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
