July Featured Artist Ahmad Jamal, Music Of Nina Simone & Summer Birthdays

Monday 7.6.15

Night Train highlights some ‘hits’ tonight – bonafide jazz hits, jazz covers of pop hits, and some rare instances of jazz compositions that were turned into pop hits. Among the highlights, an early drummer-less version of “Poinciana” from July featured artist Ahmad Jamal, the song that revived Nina Simone’s career some 30 years after it was first recorded, and a new version of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” from bassist Ben Williams.

Tuesday 7.7.15

Night Train marks birthdays of jazz fusion keyboard great Joe Zawinul, four-string guitarist Tiny Grimes and hard bop tenor sax favorite Hank Mobley – plus more from July featured artist Ahmad Jamal, and one of the more highly anticipated new releases of the year, a tribute to Gil Scott-Heron from singer Charenee Wade.

Wednesday 7.8.15

Hear birthday celebrations tonight on the Night Train for jump blues great Louis Jordan, singer Billy Eckstine and Beck (by way of a tribute album featuring his music from soul jazz organ great Dr. Lonnie Smith). Plus more from July featured artist Ahmad Jamal – this time early OKeh and Argo tracks - and new releases from Mark Egan, Steve Kaldestad and Harry Allen.

Thursday 7.9.15

More music from July featured artists Ahmad Jamal and Nina Simone, birthday salutes to drummer Stanton Moore of Galactic and saxophonist Elias Haslanger, a bit of jazz from Argentina for that country’s Independence Day (celebrated earlier in the evening on Global Village), new music from organist Pat Bianchi and also from George & Chico Freeman, and a special from the Savannah Music Festival with guitarists Julian Lage and Chris Eldridge.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
