Kansas received a 49.7 on Creighton University’s monthly Business Conditions Index for May, down from 51.2 in April. The score means that for the first time this year, Kansas’ economy is thought to be shrinking.
The index is based on surveys from business owners across the state and is scored from zero to 100.
The report says that durable good manufacturers, including agricultural machinery and aircraft manufacturers are reporting downturns in economic activity. Nondurable manufacturers, such as food processors, have also reported slower growth.
The economic downturn was seen across a nine-state midwestern region, including Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.
The report also said that sluggish economies should last until the end of the third quarter this year.
