Kansas Inmate Claims Discrimination

A Kansas prison inmate claims he's being discriminated against because the Department of Corrections won't allow visits from his husband.

Christopher Yates is serving time at the Norton Correctional Facility for conviction on charges of identity theft and perjury. The 34-year-old has been in prison since 2012. In letters written to the Topeka Capital-Journal, Yates says that prison officials will not let him see his husband, whom he married legally in Iowa.

A spokesman for the Kansas Department of Corrections says Yates' spouse is not being allowed to visit because the spouse is on probation for his role in the crimes Yates committed.

An attorney for the national gay rights group Lambda Legal says Yates' complaint is unusual but not surprising.
