Kenya’s Heroes Day, Diwali, Jane Bunnett Special & The World Side Of Dizzy Gillespie

Monday October 20

Global Village marks the Kenyan Heroes Day holiday with music from Kenya artists and bands, including the Rift Valley Brothers, Extra Golden, Ayub Ogada, and Virunga. Plus birthday salutes to Tunisian oud master Anouar Brahem and reggae artist Luciano, and more music from Haiti for the October feature – this time from the Mini All Stars.

Tuesday October 21

Global Village celebrates the birthdays of the Queen of Salsa – Celia Cruz, and jazz legend, and bebop and Latin jazz pioneer Dizzy Gillespie. Plus more Haitian music for the Global Village October feature, this time from the long-running, Miami-based Magnum Band.

Wednesday October 22

SPECIAL:  Global Village offers a rebroadcast of a special with Canadian soprano saxophone and flute player, composer, Juno Award winner, and recipient of the Order of Canada, Jane Bunnett, on her birthday. In a series of groundbreaking recordings, Bunnett worked with some of the most dynamic musicians in Cuba and explored an often unknown variety of styles from across the country, from the folkloric to the contemporary. Bunnett delves into the history of the music, the artists she found, and the distinctive and inventive music she created with them. The show also features a wide array of selections from her many Cuban projects.

 Thursday October 23

Global Village highlights blends of Latin, African and Caribbean music with funk and jazz from a diverse lineup of artists including Santana, Poncho Sanchez, the Caribbean Jazz Project, Re-Orient, and the Mardi Gras Indian group, Wild Tchoupitoulas.

Friday October 24

This time in the Global Village, a variety of flamenco styles and artists - including pop-flamenco hitmakers, the Gipsy Kings from their 25th anniversary; a Nuevo flamenco release from guitarist Juan Carmona; the Miles Español project that brought together musicians and influences from both jazz and flamenco; and the Rough Guide to Flamenco compilation.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
