Kicking Off The November Ethiopiques Feature, Remembering Bert Jansch & New Month/New Music Time!

NEW RELEASES FEATURED THIS WEEK: Roots reggae from Tikan Jah Fakloly, Arabicana from NO Blues, sounds of the Silk Road from Karavan Sarai, and the return of Kandia Kouyate

Monday, November 2

Global Village kicks off the November feature of music from Ethiopia with music from the father of Ethio-jazz, Mulatu Astatke, and music from the first two volumes of the groundbreaking Ethiopiques series. And we’re not quite done with the October UK Folk (Rock) feature since it’s the birthday of multi-instrumentalist Dave Pegg, a key figure on the English folk rock scene. We’ll hear music he did with Fairport Convention, John Martyn, Nick Drake and Richard & Linda Thompson. Plus new music from the Rough Guide to Psychedelic Cumbia compilation, and a samba-reggae classic from Margareth Menezes.

Tuesday, November 3

Global Village pays tribute to Bert Jansch on what would have been his 72nd birthday today. One of the greats of acoustic guitar and a founding member of the pioneering and eclectic English folk-rock group, Pentangle, Jansch was one of the key figures and great talents of English folk – a master of not only traditional music, but an adventurous artist who incorporated jazz, world and blues influences into his work. The program will range from his very first to later solo recordings, from the original edition of Pentangle to the reunited group, and music he also did with another Pentangle co-founder and acclaimed guitarist, John Renbourn.

Wednesday, November 4

Global Village highlights a number of artists who offer inventive combinations of jazz with musical styles from around the globe, including the Creole Soul of Trinidadian trumpeter Etienne Charles; Afro-Peruvian jazz pioneer Gabriel Alegria; Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu; North African jazz artist Maurice El Medioni; flamenco jazz from the Miles Español project; and for the November feature, Ethio-jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke.

Thursday, November 5

Songs with a social conscience this time in the Global Village with music from Fela, Oumou Sangare, Pete Seeger, Bruce Cockburn, Playing for Change 3, the reunited ‘70s UK reggae band Black Slate, and the groundbreaking Siembra album from Willie Colon and Ruben Blades that introduced a new social consciousness into contemporary salsa.

Friday, November 6
