Global Village celebrates Bastille Day with a show devoted to music from France. Along with traditional music and musette, the show highlights French world music groups, and artists from different corners of the world, often former French colonies, who now call France home. Among the performers featured – Lo’Jo, Paris Combo, Kanda Bongo Man, Manu Dibango, BibiTanga, and Maurice el Medioni.

  Wednesday, July 15

Global Village celebrates birthdays of influential African musician and musicologist Frances Bebey, reggae great Gregory Isaacs, world jazz fusion pioneer Joe Harriott, and Brazilian saxophonist Paulo Moura. Plus music from one of the founding members of Kila (Colm Mac Con Iomaire), more French sounds – as the Bastille Day overflow continues – from Paris-based world jazz fusion guitarist Nguyen Le and Cambodian rock band Dengue Fever.

Thursday, July 16

Birthdays today of salsa and film star Ruben Blades, Brazilian guitarist Bola Sete, reggae hitmaker Desmond Dekker, and West Coast Latin jazz pioneer Cal Tjader. Plus more music from Kila, the Global Village July feature – this time a solo project, Water Off a Duck’s Back, from founding member Rónán Ó Snodaigh.

Friday, July 17

Global Village highlights world jazz from free jazz legend Ornette Coleman with tabla great Badal Roy, new African jazz from vocalist Gino Sitson, new Brazilian jazz from clarinetist Anat Cohen, the pioneering world chamber jazz ensemble Oregon, South African jazz legend Abdullah Ibrahim, and birthday artists Vince Guaraldi and Chico Freeman (on a new and first-ever recording with his uncle, George Freeman).
