Lead Attorney Representing Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown Speaks in Wichita

Carla Eckels

High-profile attorney Benjamin Crump was the keynote speaker at the annual Sunflower Community Action banquet Thursday night in Wichita. Crump is known for representing the family of Trayvon Martin, the black Florida teen killed in 2012 by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman. In the wake of violence in Baltimore, Crump told reporters Wichita can improve relationships with law enforcement by making sure police officers get to know the citizens they are serving.

"It's not hard to do because the citizens want that," says Crump. "You know how special people would feel if police officers came knocking on the door and it's not to issue a warrant, it's not to arrest somebody, but it's to say, 'Hi, my name is Officer Friendly and I want you to know who I am. I want your children to know who I am. I want to know who you are.'"

Crump is President-Elect for the National Bar Association. He's currently the lead attorney for the family of Michael Brown, the young man killed by a Ferguson, Missouri, police officer last year.
