A Leap Day Marley Extra, 17 Hippies & Solas 20th Anniversaries & New Month/New Music Time

Monday, February 29

Leap Day means one extra day for the February feature and Global Village celebrates with an entire show dedicated to music from Bob Marley (from early ska days with Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh to the 2015 release of a classic show from his 1978 tour) and to some of the rising stars of the new reggae revival – including Etana, Jah 9, and Morgan Heritage with special guest Chronixx from the album that just took home the Grammy for Best Reggae Album.

Check out additional resources on February featured artist Bob Marley here.

Tuesday, March 1

Global Village kicks off the March feature celebrating 20th anniversaries of both Berlin’s quirky 17 Hippies and Irish-American band Solas with music from debut albums from both groups. Plus birthday salutes to singer and world music pioneer Harry Belafonte, Brazilian bassist Nilson Matta of Trio da Paz, Cuban guitarist and composer Leo Brower, roots reggae giant Burning Spear, and guitarist Ralph Towner of the world chamber jazz ensemble, Oregon – and there’s music from Seu Jorge’s The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions featuring his acoustic versions of David Bowie songs.

Wednesday, March 2

Tonight in the Global Village –music from sitarist (and daughter of Ravi Shankar) Anoushka Shankar, Afrobeat Airways 2 (another compilation of music from ‘70s Ghana) and the Balkans by way of Brooklyn courtesy of the Raya Brass Band. Plus a classic from Jimmy Cliff and a Juno Award winning album, Beyond Boundaries, from Kiran Ahluwalia.

Thursday, March 3

Some dance music with a twist (no pun intended) in this visit to the Global Village – including some vintage cha cha cha from Abelardo Barroso, a Bulgarian Oro from Grand Fatilla, some Bossa Nova Soul Samba from Ike Quebec, a cool mambo by Greg Piccolo, and contemporary flamenco from Jorge Pardo with Chano Dominguez.

Friday, March 4

It’s New Month/New Music time in the Global Village. Each month, Global Village devotes an entire show to the best of new world music releases. Among the highlights this time:

-New releases celebrating the 20th anniversaries of Global Village March featured artists – 17 Hippies and Solas
-A meeting of Indian music and blues from Michael Messer’s Mitra and new Indian-inspired project from Canadian world music band Sultans of String
-The return of AzizaBrahim artfully combining once again Spanish and Western Saharan influences
-Poland meets Senegal in a new project from Maria Pomianowska and GroupeGainde
-A beautiful new project from two sisters from Argentina, Las HermanasCaronni
