Let That Wild Pendulum Swing Under the Big Black Sun

Tuesday, May 3

Promised Land or Bust is the latest release from Moreland & Arbuckle. Featuring new songs from the band as well as tunes written by Ryan Taylor of the Dallas/Fort Worth band Oil Boom, Lee McBee and others, the album is the band’s debut for the Alligator label. We’ll hear selections from it as well as from the new release by Scotland’s Trashcan Sinatras, Wild Pendulum, which features a guest appearance by Dustin Arbuckle.

Listen for brand new music from Sun & Stone as well as singer-songwriter Jenny Wood. 

Thursday, May 5

Sound of Lies is the 1997 release from The Jayhawks. After the band’s highly successful 1995 release Tomorrow The Green Grass, co-founder Marc Olson left the band. The change in lineup marked a change in sound as well as Gary Louris became the main songwriter in the band. Despite some doubts from the critical community, the album remains a fan favorite. Listen for selections from that release on this episode of the show as well as music from Under The Big Black Sun, the 1982 release from X.

It’s our New Month, New Music feature with selections from the latest release by Moreland & Arbuckle, Promised Land or Bust, as well as selections from Peter Wolf, Graham Nash, and the latest from The Jayhawks, Paging Mr. Proust.

Saturday, May 7

Issued in 1992 Hollywood Town Hall was the breakthrough release from Minneapolis, Minnesota-based band The Jayhawks. Earning band comparisons to the Rolling Stones, Everly Brothers and others, the album is notable for the inclusion of several all-time Jayhawks classics including “Wichita,” “Two Angels” and “Waiting for the Sun.” Listen for selections from that release on this episode of Strange Currency as well as music from Down by the Old Mainstream by Golden Smog. 

Monday, May 9

Listen for selections from the latest release by John Doe, The Westerner. Doe, a founding member of the iconic Los Angeles punk band X returns with another foray into American roots music. We’ll hear selections from this acclaimed release as well as music from X’s Wild Gift.
