Local Business Owners Come Together To Enhance K-96 Bike Trail

The K-96 bike path will soon have new signage thanks to a donation by a group of local business owners. KMUW’s Sean Sandefur has more…

The City of Wichita received a donation of “wayfinding” signs, which will be installed along the K-96 bike path from Dr. Glen Dey Park to 127th Street East. The signage is being funded by Together Wichita, a group started by Wichita Eagle Publisher Kim Nussbaum. It now includes a number of local business leaders including Armstrong Chamberlin Marketing.

Mark Chamberlin says wayfinding signage is essential in navigating large bike paths.

“Eventually, there will be no point in the city you won’t be able to reach safely on your bicycle. And that’s why this wayfinding (signage) becomes important,” Chamberlin says. “Even though you can get there, you have to know how to get there.”

There will be seven solar powered signs that will light up at night and feature maps of the trail system. There will be 24 smaller signs with directional markers. The project has been in the works for about a year and will total $60,000. Installation is expected to start in early summer.

Together Wichita is also behind the Keepers on Parade project, and the “I Live Here, I Love It”chalkboards.
