Lots Of Jazz Birthdays, New Music, Classics & Special Live Jazz For New Year’s Eve

Monday 12.28.15

Night Train celebrates a long list of birthdays tonight – including guitarist Joe Cohn, drummer Ed Thigpen, keyboardist Lonnie Liston Smith, saxophonist Ted Nash, and pianists Michel Petrucciani and Earl ‘Fatha’ Hines. Plus new music from WSU Jazz Guitar professor William Flynn, flutist Andrea Brachfeld, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, the Bob Mintzer Big Band and more.

Tuesday 12.29.15

Night Train marks birthdays of saxophonist Joe Lovano and pianist Danielo Perez, and salutes Billy Tipton with music from the Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quintet. Plus new music from John Scofield, Karrin Allyson, the Mack Avenue Superband, and more.

Tribute albums are in the spotlight tonight on the Night Train – including George Cable’s celebration of his Icons & Influences, Cedar Walton paying tribute to his Roots, Eric Alexander’s salute to Chicago jazz on his album Chicago Fire, Carmen McRae’s remembrance of Sarah Vaughan, Freddy Cole’s album in honor of Billy Eckstine, and Craig Handy celebrating both Jimmy Smith and the music of New Orleans.

Thursday 12.31.15

We see out the year with two specials from European Jazz Stage. In hour one, classic performances from three decades of live performances at the North Sea Jazz Festival – including Phil Woods, Betty Carter, the Harper Brothers, and Toots Thielemans. Then, some great talents in hour two, with live performances from organ master Dr. Lonnie Smith and one of the most acclaimed and active bassists on the jazz scene today, Christian McBride.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
