Monday, August 1

We celebrate the anniversary of George Harrison’s Concert for Bangladesh with selections from the concert itself as well as music from the musicians involved. 

Tuesday, August 2

Lovers is the latest release from Wilco guitarist Nels Cline. Cline has worked in a variety of styles including avant-garde music and jazz in addition to his work in the rock world. We’ll hear selections from Lovers, a record inspired by the works of composers and musicians such as Bill Evans, Jim Hall, Gil Evans, Johnny Mandel, Henry Mancini and others. Plus, music from Carolina, the latest release by Spain.

Wednesday, August 3

In 1994, the newly-formed Gov’t Mule retired to Tel-Star studios in Brandon, Florida to cut a series of demos. Although the individual members had established themselves as formidable sidemen, there was no telling that the group would continue the legacy of Southern rock well into the new century. Those demos have just been issued as The Tel-Star Sessions we’ll hear selections from that release on this episode of the show as well as music from featured artist Aretha Franklin. 

Thursday, August 4

Shawn Colvin and Steve Earle are established singer-songwriters who need no introduction. After years of friendship, the two released their first-ever collaborative effort earlier in 2016. We’ll hear music from that recording as well as music from selections from Lucinda Williams.

Friday, August 5

It’s our New Month, New Music feature with selections from the latest releases by Brandan Canning of Canada’s Broken Social Scene plus music from Scambot 2, the new album by Mike Keneally. 

Saturday, August 6

In the 1990s British songwriter Richard Thompson was asked to list his favorite songs of the millennium by Playboy magazine. Suspecting that the publication’s staff really meant the best songs of the rock era Thompson nevertheless created a listed that spanned nearly 1000 years. When his choices were rejected he decided to create an evening of music that including selections from the thirteenth century all the way to the early 2000s. We’ll hear selections from his 1000 Years of Popular Music collection as well as music from Canada’s Crash Test Dummies.

Monday, August 8

At the end of the 1980s, David Bowie teamed with brothers Hunt and Tony Sales as well as guitarist Reeves Gabrels to form Tin Machine. The group delivered two albums and one live EP before Bowie returned to his solo career. We’ll hear selections from the band’s self-titled release as well as music from Bowie’s longtime friend Iggy Pop.

The new film Miss Sharon Jones follows the dynamic front-woman through her 2013 battle with cancer and her triumphant return to the stage around the 2014 release of Grammy-nominated album Give The People What They Want. We’ll hear selections from the soundtrack to this film as well as featured music by Aretha Franklin.

Thursday, August 11

Boys And Girls... And The World is the latest release from The Boxmasters, the roots and country band featuring Billy Bob Thornton. We’ll hear music from that release as well as selections from Slim Dunlap’s 1996 album Times Like This

Friday, August 12

Based in Berlin, Germany Markus Reuter has released a number of albums in collaboration with other artists and under his own name. We’ll hear selections from some of his varied works on this episode of Strange Currency as well as music from Reuter’s bandmate in Stick Men, Tony Levin in collaboration with his brother Pete Levin.

Saturday, August 13

Although widely known for his work with the Minneapolis band The Replacements, Bob “Slim” Dunlap already had a decade’s worth of performing and recording behind before joining that band in the late 1980s. We’ll celebrate Dunlap’s birthday a day early with selections from a variety of musical projects he’s been involved in as well as hearing versions of his songs as performed by other artists.

Monday, August 15

Listen for selections from Everchild, the latest release by Dark Suns as well as music from Porcupine Tree frontman Steven Wilson.

Jedd Beaudoin is host/producer of the nationally syndicated program Strange Currency. He has also served as an arts reporter, a producer of A Musical Life and a founding member of the KMUW Movie Club.
